Booking and Cancellation Terms

1- All boats are booked with an advance payment by card or bank transfer. Smaller boats require a deposit of 15% or 20%, and larger boats require a 50% deposit.

2- The balance is paid on the day of the tour before boarding (by cash or credit card). The day cannot begin unless payment is completed.

3- All boats require a contract, which is signed before the activity begins. This contract is exclusively between the client and the boat owner. Formentera Natural, as an intermediary, is exempt from any responsibility related to this agreement.

4- Deposits are made in cash or by card hold. Some banks may take up to 42 hours to release the hold (varies by bank). Boats with a skipper do not require a deposit.

5- Cancellations:

• If the skippers or boat owners cancel the tour due to bad weather, technical problems, or general safety concerns, 100% of the client’s money will be refunded.

• If the client cancels for personal reasons with more than 15 days’ notice, 50% of the deposit will be refunded.

• If the client cancels for personal reasons with less than 15 days’ notice, the deposit will not be refunded.

6- Payment of the deposit implies acceptance of the above terms.

Where to sail with a boat in Formentera?

The boat rental in Formentera is a common activity, and before departure, you will be informed of the best routes for that specific day, depending on the wind and sea conditions. Generally, all navigation takes place in the Ses Salines Natural Park (i.e., the side of Formentera facing Ibiza). Depending on the boat, there are three main options:

1- Renting a license-free boat in Formentera:

Due to range (distance allowed by the fuel tank), safety (mobile signal coverage), and the port’s location, the recommended route is:

From the Port of La Savina sail along the beaches of Ses Illetes to the Isla de Espalmador. Then continue to Punta Pedrera, Natural Pools, Punta Gavina, Cala Saona and the caves.

2- Renting a licensed boat in Formentera:

If you have a license and therefore experience, your navigation around the island is only limited by your certification. However, it’s important to note that the La Mola area, which has cliffs and strong currents, presents significant technical difficulty. If you want the best route in Formentera, follow the advice on our map, and you can also include the beaches of Levante.

3- Boat rental with skipper in Formentera: when you have a skipper, it’s usual for the client to suggest points of interest, and the captain will evaluate and propose the best route for that day based on those preferences (weather permitting).

What happens if there’s bad weather?

If conditions are not safe for sailing, our team will contact you beforehand and offer the option to cancel or reschedule the date. If the cancellation is due to bad weather, your money will always be refunded.

However, you should keep in mind that cloudy weather is NOT considered bad weather. What we assess is the wind and waves, as these can make navigation unsafe.

If there is moderate wind or swell, our team will inform you of the conditions and it will be your decision whether to go out or not. With a bit of caution, it is usually possible to find sheltered areas and enjoy the day without issues.

As for summer rain in Formentera, keep in mind that they are usually brief summer storms that last about an hour, and the sun typically comes out again afterward.

Can anyone drive a license-free boat in Formentera?

Any engine with 15 hp or less can be operated by an adult without a license according to Balearic Islands legislation. This is permitted because the boats do not reach high speeds, are very easy to handle, and there is no accident rate to contradict this.

For boats with engines of more than 15 hp, the appropriate valid license is required. This license must be current and recognized by Spain.

What should I know to drive a boat without a license in Formentera?

The instructions we give all our clients before boarding are:

1- Starting the boat with the key is just like a car, but there’s also a small safety device called “man overboard” (it connects the battery and shuts off the engine if you fall into the water).

2- The steering wheel works like a car, simply turn it left or right to maneuver.

3- The lever next to the wheel is the boat throttle and has three positions (like an automatic car): forward, neutral (N), and reverse.

4- There is a small red button next to the lever that raises and lowers the engine; this is used when approaching the shore, so the propeller doesn’t hit the bottom.

5- The sunshade is retractable—you can open or close it as you like.

6- The boat has compartments or dry storage bags (depending on the model) where you can store phones or valuables. Note that personal items are the responsibility of each client.

7- When leaving the port of Formentera, you must be cautious with ferries and incoming boats, so proceed at very low speed and always stay on the right-hand side.

8- Your maneuvers in a license-free boat in Formentera should be clear, which helps other boats understand your course. If a boat is coming head-on, you must give way early and clearly so the other vessel knows how to react.

9- On many popular beaches in Formentera, there is a line of yellow buoys which indicates the swimming zone—these should not be crossed. There is always a marked access channel to approach the beach, marked by one red and one green buoy.

10- You can drop anchor anywhere to go for a swim, but you must ensure you don’t anchor over seagrass (Posidonia), as this is prohibited and subject to fines.

Can I stop at any beach in Formentera?

If the area is not marked with yellow buoys, you may drop anchor to swim or go ashore. However, keep in mind:

1- Make sure the anchor chain isn’t too short; the weight of the chain is what keeps the boat in place.

2- Ensure the seabed is sand or rock. Be very careful not to anchor over Posidonia meadows (you’ll recognize them because the water appears green due to the vegetation).

3- If you leave the boat to go ashore, it must be a day without wind or waves, as these can cause the boat to drift.

Does the fuel in rental boats in Formentera last all day?

All rental boats in Formentera are delivered with more than enough fuel for the whole day. However, in some boats fuel is included, and in others it’s not (you’ll see it indicated in the +Info section).

When fuel is not included, upon returning to the port, you must refuel at the gas station. Each boat’s info includes the estimated fuel cost.

What’s the difference between motorboats and zodiacs in Formentera?

There are two main categories of rental boats in Formentera:

1- Semi-rigid or zodiac boats (option 1 on our website): these have a fiberglass bottom and inflatable rubber sides. These boats are known for their ease of access to the water and their stability.

2- Rigid boats (option 2 and beyond): these are made entirely of fiberglass. They are usually taller, look more elegant, and offer more comfort features.

Can I sail around Formentera with a license-free boat?

Can I reach Espalmador with license-free boats?

It’s the must-do boat tour in Formentera, since Espalmador island can only be reached by boat and it is stunning. The island has a wide bay where you’ll see many boats and can drop anchor to go ashore (always respecting the yellow buoy zone).

To reach the coast, there is an access channel marked with red and yellow buoys. You can approach the coast but never leave the boat inside the channel.

How to rent a boat in Ibiza to visit Formentera?

For license-free boats (models 1 and 2 on our website): it’s not possible to rent them in Ibiza and sail to Formentera. If you want a license-free boat, you must take a ferry to Formentera (at Formentera Natural we offer round-trip tickets for 43 € per person with open return), and rent the boat here in Formentera port. Is it safe to rent a license-free boat in Formentera if I’m going with children?

Renting a license-free boat with the family in Formentera is a very good option. The tour is safe and we provide life jackets for children. There are just two main recommendations:

1- It is not advisable to rent boats in Formentera with children under 3 years old.

2- It is essential that children wear life jackets at all times, and to understand that full responsibility lies with the accompanying adult.

Do I need to present my navigation license?

If you want to rent a licensed boat in Formentera, it is essential (with no exceptions) to present your license, either the original or a photocopy.
